Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an impact to the head adversely affects the brain. TBIs are usually caused by accidents, most commonly a slip and fall accident, but car accidents, motorcycle crashes, and truck accidents can also result in devastating TBIs. Depending on the severity of the trauma, a traumatic brain injury can have life-altering effects for the injured party as well as their family.
Doctors classify traumatic brain injuries as mild, moderate, or severe based on a patient’s symptoms. The classification of a TBI is based on several factors including whether or not the injured party lost consciousness, the length of time the patient was unconscious, and the severity of the exhibited symptoms.
Mild TBI
Symptoms of mild traumatic brain injuries, or concussions, are usually temporary. If a patient loses consciousness in a mild TBI, it is for under 30 minutes. The effects of a concussion are often only felt for a few hours or days, although some may last for weeks or months. Despite being minor on their own, many concussions over a period of time can have devastating effects. Mild TBIs include:
- Loss of consciousness
- A state of confusion
- Headache
- Vomiting or severe nausea
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping more often
- Dizziness and loss of balance
Moderate TBI
Moderate traumatic brain injuries cause a person to lose consciousness for more than 30 minutes. Symptoms of moderate TBIs are similar to those of mild brain injuries; however, symptoms will generally be more severe and will last longer.
Severe TBI
Severe traumatic brain injuries refer to injuries in which a patient loses consciousness for more than 24 hours. Symptoms will likely be severe and long lasting. Symptoms of severe TBIs include:
- Numbness in fingers or toes
- Seizures or convulsions
- Dilation of one or both pupils
- Persistent headache and vomiting
