The District of Columbia is joining several states in suing e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL Labs Inc. These lawsuits allege that JUUL’s viral marketing contributed to the epidemic of youth e-cigarette. They further allege that JUUL’s advertising targeted teens through the use of young models, bright colors, and sweet flavors like Fruit Medley, Mango, and Mint. As a result, JUUL, is at the center of several consumer lawsuits, many alleging that its marketing tactics and deceitful product packaging led teens to develop intense nicotine addiction. In a recent government survey, one in four high school students reported using e-cigarettes the previous month, despite federal law banning sales to those under 18.
