D.C. Joins States Suing Juul Labs

The District of Columbia is joining several states in suing e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL Labs Inc. These lawsuits allege that JUUL’s viral marketing contributed to the epidemic of youth e-cigarette. They further allege that JUUL’s advertising targeted teens through the use of young models, bright colors, and sweet flavors like Fruit Medley, Mango, and Mint. As a result, JUUL, is at the center of several consumer lawsuits, many alleging that its marketing tactics and deceitful product packaging led teens to develop intense nicotine addiction. In a recent government survey, one in four high school students reported using e-cigarettes the previous month, despite federal law banning sales to those under 18.

JUUL had previously ended its U.S. advertising campaigns and social media accounts as well as ceased sales of its mint flavored products.

Quitting vaping is hard and can take more than one try. One of the keys to quitting for good is to understand the normal symptoms of quitting nicotine versus serious complications. Below are normal symptoms of vaping withdrawal, but if you are concerned about how long these symptoms are lasting, seek medical assistance to make sure nothing more serious is going on.

Symptoms of vaping withdrawal include the following:

  • Intense cravings for nicotine
  • Tingling in the hands and feet
  • Sweating
  • Nausea and abdominal cramping
  • Constipation and gas
  • Headaches
  • Coughing
  • Sore Throat

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of November 20, 2019, there have been 2,290 reported cases of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI) in 49 states (all except Alaska), the District of Columbia, and 2 U.S. territories (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands). Data from CDC indicates that patients with EVALI are mostly young, white males. All EVALI patients have reported a history of using e-cigarette, or vaping, products

Symptoms of EVALI mimic those of other severe respiratory illnesses, such as the flu and pneumonia. Patients have experienced the following symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
