There are numerous risks associated with driving. From negligent and distracted drivers, to unsafe driving conditions, car accidents and injuries occur on a daily basis and are one of the leading causes of fatal injuries in the United States.
According to the United States Department of Transportation, a large number of accidents and injuries are associated with roadway intersections and junctions. In a recent study, the Department of Transportation reported that 51 percent of crashes resulting in injury occur at intersections. Out of fatal car accidents, 28 percent occur at roadway junctions and intersections.
New Technology Aims to Reduce Crashes at Intersections
According to the National Safety Council, roadways are becoming more, rather than less dangerous as time progresses. 2016 was considered to be the deadliest year on the road, as over 40,000 fatalities occurred due to motor vehicle accidents.
Companies have recently turned to the trend in autonomous driving to search for an answer to intersection collisions. Basing new technology on features intended for use in autonomous vehicles, North America’s branch of Continental Automotives has developed a new vehicle perception technology that may help to improve intersection safety under the Intelligent Intersection initiative.
Continental developed new system that can detect road users within a 360 degree radius of an intersection. The new technology, Vehicle-to-X (V2X), serves as a form of communication between vehicles equipped with the program, offering the position and movement of any objects within a 360 degree field of vision.
To prevent accidents and injuries for motorists and pedestrians, Continental has plans to equip not only cars, but intersections, with V2X communication technology. In order for the new technology to work, vehicles will need to be equipped with on-board technology, in addition to placing cameras and radar detectors at intersections. When hooked up, all systems will communicate to develop a comprehensive environmental model that will alert drivers to potential intersection risks.
Continental hopes to implement on-board vehicle applications of the V2X software, which will use communications between the vehicle and the intersection to generate messages and warnings for the driver. In critical situations where a collision is imminent, the vehicle’s brakes may be deployed automatically in order to prevent accidents associated with negligent, drowsy, or even distracted drivers.
While advancements in technology are aiming to create a safer driving environment, accidents due to vehicle error and personal negligence can occur at any time. If you or someone you know has experienced personal injury due to negligence or distracted driving, you may be entitled to compensation. It is in your best interest to speak with a qualified car accident lawyer to determine your rights and responsibilities.
